Bye, Bye Double Bye?

The Big East basketball coaches unanimously voted to change the current double-bye format earlier this week during the league’s spring meeting taking place in Ponte Vedra, FL.  The change now needs to pass the sniff test of the school presidents who vetoed a similar proposal just last year.

If adopted, the new format would award no byes but would give the top four seeds a day off.  Once approved by the ADs, the school presidents will vote the new format either up or down.  Last year, the presidents voted against a similar proposal because the current double-bye structure had only been in place for one year.

The proposal brackets the top four seeds against the bottom four on day one (Tuesday) and the winners would not play again until Thursday in the Quarterfinal Round.  Teams seeded #5 though #12 would play on day two and the winners would play the following day against (presumably) a higher seed with a day’s rest.
