LOUISVILLE, Ky., Dec. 9 (UPI) -- Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong was hired Wednesday to be the next head football coach at the University of Louisville.

Strong, 49, succeeds the fired Steve Kragthorpe.  Since becoming coordinator with the Gators in 2003, Strong oversaw a defense that intercepted 131 passes.

"My whole goal is to work to a put a product on the field that you're proud of," Strong said at a news conference. "These young men need to understand that we care about them ... and (that will enable) this program to be back where it needs to be."

Under Kragthorpe, the Cardinals went from 6-6 in 2006-07 to 5-7 in 2007-08 and 4-8 this season, Louisville's worst since a 1-10 record in 1997. His record was 15-21 overall in the Big East -- 5-16 in the conference.

"I was amazed how well-respected and revered Charlie Strong is throughout the country," said Louisville Athletic Director Tom Jurich.
